Turkish experts warn of hidden lung hazards from barbecue smoke
Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Kunter, a chest‑disease specialist at Medipol Koşuyolu Hospital, explained that the smoke produced when charcoal and lighter fluid are burned releases colourless, odourless toxic gases. He said, “Mangal dumanında bulunan polisiklik aromatik hidrokarbonlar gibi bazı maddeler renksizdir ve bazen rahatsız edici bir kokuya da sahip değildir. Bu nedenle fark edilmeden solunabilir. Görünmeyen bu gazlara mümkün olduğunca maruz kalmamak ve dumanı doğrudan solumamak büyük önem taşıyor.”
Long‑term exposure can trigger asthma attacks, increase the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (KOAH) and, with frequent exposure, raise the likelihood of lung cancer. Kunter added, “Bir kez mangal yapmak elbette akciğer kanserine neden olmaz. Ancak bu toksik gazlara sık ve uzun süre maruz kalmak akciğer kanseri riskini artırabilir.” He recommends grilling in well‑ventilated areas and avoiding direct inhalation, especially for people who barbecue often or as a profession.
