In the early hours of September 1, 2026, drones entered the airspace of Estonia and Latvia, prompting emergency responses from NATO and local defense forces. The Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) issued cell broadcast alerts to residents in several counties, including Ida-Viru, Lääne-Viru, Tartu, and others, advising them to seek shelter if drones were spotted.

Turkish F-16 fighter jets, stationed at the Ämari Air Base as part of NATO’s Baltic air defense mission, were scrambled to respond to the activity. According to Brigadier General Riivo Valge, one drone approached the city of Narva from the Russian border before turning back, while a second drone crossed into southeastern Estonia. The scrambled jets did not open fire, and no drones crashed on Estonian territory.

Latvia also issued airspace warnings for the Alūksne and Ludza districts. In response to the potential threat, Finland restricted aviation and shipping in the eastern Gulf of Finland. The Estonian government lifted the nationwide air threat warning by approximately 05:30 local time. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna noted that the incident is a consequence of Russia’s war against Ukraine and emphasized that the alliance reacted swiftly as planned.
