Turkish F-16 jets secured Latvian airspace during elections
Turkish F-16 fighter jets were temporarily deployed to the Lielvārde airbase to protect Latvian airspace during the parliamentary elections held on October 3. Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis visited the Turkish unit to express gratitude for their rapid response and contribution to national security.
The deployment was part of NATO’s integrated air and missile defense mission. In addition to Turkey, Germany and Italy provided aerial support, with Germany sending four Eurofighter jets to the base.
Because Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania do not possess their own fighter jets, they rely on NATO air policing missions. This specific deployment also served as a test of NATO’s ability to rapidly relocate forces and evaluated the readiness of the Lielvārde base to host and service allied air power.
