Turkey agricultural sector faces profitability and support debates
Turkey's agricultural sector is currently marked by contrasting reports on farmer profitability and government support. In Çorum, sugar beet producer Mustafa Ertuğrul has gained social media attention by disputing claims of widespread losses. He asserts that high yields can result in net profits of 10,000 to 25,000 lira per decare, arguing that those failing to turn a profit are due to low yields rather than market conditions.
In a different region, CHP Niğde Deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer reported that cabbage producers in Bor are suffering significant losses. He noted that cabbage prices have dropped from 70 lira to 30–35 lira per unit, while transportation and input costs like fuel and fertilizer have surged. Producers in Niğde expressed concerns that a lack of production planning is leaving crops unsold in the fields.
To address financial needs within the sector, Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı announced that 952 million lira in advance payments has been transferred to sugar beet producers. These funds are intended to help farmers cover essential costs such as fuel, fertilizer, and labor to ensure sustainable production.
