Turkish farmers face bankruptcy risk due to extreme rainfall
Ahmet Tevfik Dayan, the Besni District President of the Anahtar Party, has issued an urgent call for climate credit to support farmers in Adıyaman, Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, and Şanlıurfa. He reported that excessive autumn rainfall has severely disrupted agricultural production in these key regions.
The continuous rain has delayed harvests and made it impossible to dry essential crops, including tobacco, peppers, corn, cotton, figs, and peanuts. Due to high moisture levels, many products cannot find buyers or are being sold far below market value. Dayan warned that this crisis puts regional farmers at a significant risk of bankruptcy and threatens local businesses that supply seeds, fertilizer, and logistics.
To mitigate the impact, Dayan proposed a specialized financing model involving the restructuring of producer debts through banks, with payments directed to local creditors. He cautioned that these supply chain disruptions could lead to food inflation and shortages across Turkey.
