Turkish film festivals highlight independent cinema and veteran directors

The fifth Ayvalık International Film Festival, organized by the Seyir Association, has concluded. The event featured independent films, many of which were being screened in Turkey for the first time. In addition to screenings, the festival included discussions and a ‘Young Cinema’ program designed to provide training for university students.

Festival director Azize Tan noted that despite economic challenges, the organization has strengthened its structure and expanded its audience, reaching a peak of 3,000 attendees for the Open Air Film Nights. The festival aims to meet growing local demand for diverse cinematic offerings.

Meanwhile, the 63rd Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival has announced its National Feature Film Competition nominees. Scheduled for October 24–31, the festival will feature 12 competing films with a total prize pool of 11 million TL. The jury will be led by director Derviş Zaim.

Notable participants include Yeşim Ustaoğlu, returning after a ten-year hiatus with ‘Artakalan’, and Ferit Karahan, who is competing for his third Golden Orange award with ‘Cinlerin Düğünü’. The selection also includes world premieres from filmmakers such as Biket İlhan, Hüseyin Karabey, Aydın Orak, and Emre Kavuk.
