Turkish financial authorities monitor credit card spending patterns
The Revenue Administration (GİB) and the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) in Turkey are increasing scrutiny of digital financial activities and credit card usage. Authorities are specifically analyzing discrepancies between individuals' declared income and their actual spending profiles.
Key areas of investigation include high-value credit card payments made by individuals with low reported income, as well as patterns where credit card debts are consistently settled by third parties via bank transfers. Such activities may be flagged as transactions requiring explanation to ensure they do not mask unregistered commercial activities or illicit money flows.
Additionally, regulations from the Central Bank and the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) restrict the use of credit cards and cash advances for investment purposes, such as purchasing foreign currency, gold, or cryptocurrencies.
