Turkish fishermen prepare for upcoming fishing season

Fishermen in Turkey are preparing for the upcoming fishing season, which officially begins on September 1 following the end of the fishing ban. In Samsun, crews are currently conducting maintenance on vessels, engines, and equipment, while repairing worn nets to ensure readiness.

Cemal Malkoç, President of the Seafood Hunters Producer Association, expressed optimism regarding the abundance of bonito (palamut) this year. He noted that signs of increased bonito activity have already been observed along the Black Sea coast, from İğneada to Hopa, suggesting a potentially productive season for the Anatolian side.

In the Akçakoca district of Düzce, local authorities have launched a support initiative titled ‘Bring Your Old Net, Take Your New Net’. This project, a collaboration between the Düzce Governor's Office, the Provincial Special Administration, and the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, has distributed 300 fishing nets to local fishermen. The 1 million TL project allocates 775,500 TL for net procurement and the remainder for infrastructure improvements at the Akçakoca Fishermen's Shelter to enhance operational safety and sustainability.
