Turkish Football Federation considers stricter sanctions amid Süper Lig referee controversies

Controversial refereeing and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions in the Trendyol Süper Lig have sparked widespread criticism from football clubs following the first six weeks of the new season. Despite the implementation of a foreign VAR system intended to ensure fairness, errors by international officials from Spain, Scotland, and Poland have intensified tensions.

Specific incidents, such as those during the Trabzonspor-Galatasaray match, have drawn scrutiny regarding missed red cards and inconsistent disciplinary actions. The Central Referee Committee (MHK), led by Ferhat Gündoğdu, has become the primary target of these complaints.

In response to the escalating tension and harsh public statements regarding the league's integrity, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) is reportedly preparing stricter disciplinary measures. Drawing inspiration from the English disciplinary model, the TFF may introduce significantly higher fines—potentially reaching 10 million TL—and rights deprivation sanctions to deter aggressive pre-match statements targeting officials and the federation.
