Turkey appoints Özlem Karapınar as Air Force's first female general
The 2026 High Military Council (YAŞ) meeting, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, approved a sweeping set of promotions within the Turkish Armed Forces. Colonel Özlem Karapınar was promoted to brigadier general, becoming the first woman to reach general rank in the Turkish Air Force. The council also appointed Lieutenant General Rafet Dalkıran as the new commander of the Air Force, extended Navy commander Oramiral Ercüment Tatlıoğlu’s term by one year, and promoted 25 generals and admirals and 69 colonels to the next rank. As a result, the total number of generals and admirals rose to 334, and the count of women generals and admirals reached five.
In addition, several senior officers were retired for lack of position, most notably Lieutenant General Mete Kuş, whose removal followed public controversy over F‑16 flights over a football match. The extensive personnel changes reshape the command structure of the Turkish military for the coming years.
