Turkey launches breast cancer awareness and screening campaigns
In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, various health organizations, municipalities, and medical experts across Turkey are conducting extensive awareness campaigns and screening programs.
Medical professionals emphasize that early diagnosis is critical for successful treatment, noting that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. Experts highlight the importance of radiological imaging, such as mammography and ultrasound, to detect changes that cannot be felt by hand. Additionally, medical specialists are raising awareness about the risk of breast cancer in men, which accounts for approximately 1% of all cases.
Local initiatives include mobile screening units (KETEM) traveling to rural villages to ensure healthcare accessibility, awareness walks in Manisa, and educational seminars in Konak and Selçuk. These programs cover topics ranging from self-examination and risk factors—such as genetics, obesity, and lifestyle—to the impact of chemical exposure and the importance of preserving fertility during treatment. Municipalities like Izmir are also utilizing health volunteers to provide interactive education on preventive health and breastfeeding.
