Turkey issues health warnings on sugar consumption and obesity

The Turkish Ministry of Health has issued warnings regarding excessive sugar consumption, particularly through sweetened beverages, noting its link to obesity and diabetes. This initiative is part of the ‘Turkey Healthy Nutrition and Active Life Program’ (2025-2028), which includes screening for diabetes and weight issues via family physicians and promoting healthy food choices through the ‘School Food Logo’ project.

In Malatya, the ‘Healthy Child Festival’ was held at 100. Yıl Kent Parkı with the support of the Malatya Metropolitan Municipality. Mayor Sami Er emphasized the importance of supporting children's physical, social, and mental development, noting that a healthy society is built upon healthy children. The municipality is also expanding access to learning through new library projects.

Health experts and nutritionists have advised the public to be wary of ‘hidden’ sugars in processed snacks, sauces, and even products labeled as ‘fit’ or ‘natural.’ Recommendations include choosing water over sugary drinks, consuming whole fruits instead of juice, and reading nutrition labels carefully to manage metabolic risks like insulin resistance.
