Turkish high schools compete in COP31 environmental knowledge contests

High schools in Turkey are participating in environmental and climate-themed knowledge competitions organized as part of the COP31 Türkiye initiative. These contests aim to increase awareness regarding climate change, renewable energy, water resource protection, biodiversity, waste management, and sustainable living.

In Adana, Seyhan İstiklal Anadolu Lisesi secured first place in the Seyhan district competition, competing against six other high schools. Coordinated by teacher Gamze Zöhre, the winning students will now advance to the Adana provincial finals scheduled for late October. School Director Hasan Basri Arslan emphasized the importance of fostering environmental responsibility in students.

In Antalya, the Kemer district final was held between Göynük Fen Lisesi and Ünal Aysal Anadolu Lisesi, with the latter emerging as the winner. Kemer District Director of National Education, Mehmet Erkan Ergen, highlighted the role of such competitions in developing climate sensitivity among youth and noted ongoing regional efforts, such as the Blue Mediterranean Initiative, to protect coastal environments.
