Turkish investigators solve cold cases using advanced DNA forensics

The Unsolved Crimes Investigation Department is utilizing advanced forensic technology and genetic analysis to resolve long-standing cold cases in Turkey. By re-examining microscopic evidence such as saliva on cigarette butts, biological samples under fingernails, and even microscopic paint particles, investigators are identifying perpetrators who previously evaded justice.

In Diyarbakır’s Çermik district, the 2016 murder of shepherd Mehmet Emin Karaalp was solved through DNA extracted from cigarette butts found at the scene. This investigation led to the detention of eight individuals and the arrest of five suspects. Additionally, authorities are revisiting the 2013 disappearance of Dilek Kalkan in Bismil by comparing clothing found in a riverbed with items she was wearing when she vanished.

In Muş, investigators uncovered a 2011 murder linked to a decades-old blood feud. Digital records and historical analysis revealed that a hitman had been brought from Germany to carry out the killing. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has emphasized that the state will continue to pursue these cases regardless of how much time has passed.
