Turkey: Journalists protest press freedom and censorship

Journalists and press professional organizations held simultaneous protests in at least 10 Turkish cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, and Diyarbakır, to protest against increasing pressure on the media. The demonstrations, organized under the slogan “No to censorship, freedom to news,” were timed to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the appointment of a trustee to the news outlet TELE 1.

Protesters expressed opposition to the detention and arrest of journalists, the appointment of trustees to media organizations, and access restrictions on news websites and social media accounts. Participants in the marches, which included representatives from various political parties and civil society organizations, called for the release of detained journalists such as Murat Ağırel and İsmail Arı.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) issued statements of solidarity, condemning the crackdown on independent media and supporting the nationwide actions.
