Turkish journalists face legal restrictions following investigations
Journalists Murat Ağırel and İsmail Saymaz are facing judicial restrictions in Turkey following investigations into allegations involving Ministry of Commerce Minister Ömer Bolat. Ağırel reported being placed under house arrest with an electronic monitoring device after giving testimony regarding claims made in Parliament about fund investments.
The investigation stems from reports investigating whether a minister profited significantly from specific investment funds. Ağırel stated his reporting was based on parliamentary inquiries and public records. Other journalists, including Şaban Sevinç and Mustafa Balcı, have reportedly been detained, while others face similar accusations of violating the ‘Disinformation Law’, which critics describe as a ‘Censorship Law’.
AK Party Group Chairman Abdullah Güler reportedly expressed that he was unaware of some of these judicial decisions and noted that individuals accused of violating Capital Markets Board (SPK) laws should have their identities protected to uphold the right to reputation.
