Alihan Kuriş criminal organization investigation expands in Turkey

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has provided details regarding an ongoing investigation into the Alihan Kuriş criminal organization. The probe, conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, focuses on allegations of money laundering, fraud against the state, and the establishment of a criminal organization. Gürlek emphasized that the operation is a financial investigation targeting a criminal group rather than a religious organization, despite the group allegedly exploiting religious sentiments to fund a luxury lifestyle.

Key developments include a third wave of operations resulting in the detention of 54 suspects. Authorities have appointed trustees to 11 companies and 4 associations. Investigators have also identified approximately 180 valuable real estate properties owned by Kuriş and his family. There are reports of funds being transferred abroad, specifically through tourism companies and Umrah organizations, with allegations that the group intends to move its operational center to Cologne, Germany.

Additionally, the investigation is examining the suspicious 2016 death of former group leader Arif Ahmet Denizolgun. New forensic evidence and witness testimonies suggest the death may not have been natural. The Minister also addressed controversies regarding the use of a vehicle assigned to former Interior Minister İdris Naim Şahin, noting that HTS records contradict Şahin's claims regarding the vehicle's usage.
