Turkish language facing degradation due to digital era

Dr. Murat Bulut, an assistant professor at Karabük University, has raised concerns regarding the increasing degradation of the Turkish language due to digitalization and social media usage.

Bulut notes that widespread use of social media, messaging applications, and digital communication has led to significant errors in both written and spoken Turkish. He highlights a trend where users frequently mispronounce words by swallowing letters—such as saying ‘geliyo’ instead of ‘geliyor’—a habit that is often mistakenly perceived as a form of politeness.

Furthermore, the practice of using abbreviations in text messages and emails, such as replacing ‘merhaba’ with ‘mrb’, is contributing to the loss of correct spelling and grammar over time. Bulut warns that these digital habits are causing a decline in the proper use of the language.
