Turkish leaders address identity debates surrounding Amedspor

Political leaders and legal experts in Turkey are addressing the intersection of sports and identity regarding the football club Amedspor.

Lawyer Cevdet Nasıranlı stated that Amedspor should not be reduced to a single identity or portrayed as a team from another country. He noted that while the club has strong support among Kurdish citizens, it also attracts fans from various other backgrounds, similar to Turkey’s major clubs. He warned that treating the club as a divisive tool could harm social peace and brotherhood.

MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli expressed concerns regarding the use of sports to drive identity-based politics. Bahçeli mentioned that he previously resigned his membership from Beşiktaş due to dissatisfaction with slogans used in the stands. He cautioned against equating sports with specific identities and warned that uncontrolled movements in stadiums could lead to dangerous consequences.
