Turkish leaders discuss urban identity and social memory
Various Turkish figures and local authorities are addressing the social and cultural dimensions of urbanization in Turkey. Selçuk Mızraklı, former Co-Mayor of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, emphasized that democratic urbanization must go beyond physical construction to include social memory, culture, and community solidarity. He stressed that local governments have a responsibility to be accountable to citizens, who are stakeholders in their cities.
In Bursa, the Yıldırım Municipality has launched the ‘Bursa’s Memory’ program. This initiative aims to preserve the city’s cultural heritage by recording the oral histories and memories of individuals who witnessed the city’s recent past, thereby creating a bridge between generations.
Additionally, Ahmet Muratoğlu, the Trabzon Provincial Chairman of the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi), criticized current urbanization trends for prioritizing concrete growth and rent-based urban transformation. He argued that while cities are physically expanding, social cohesion is declining, leading to increased alienation among neighbors and a loss of unique urban identities.
