Turkish legislative proposals address journalist passports and police recruitment

New legislative proposals have been introduced in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) targeting professional rights and recruitment standards.

Mahmut Tanal, a Yeni Party MP, submitted a bill to grant green passports to Turkish citizens who have worked in journalism for at least 15 years. Notably, the proposal seeks to remove the requirement of holding a press card, allowing professional seniority to be verified through tax records, published works, or service contracts. The bill also proposes combining intermittent periods of employment to calculate total professional seniority.

Separately, Eskişehir MP Jale Nur Süllü has submitted a parliamentary inquiry requesting changes to the Police Vocational Training Centers (POMEM) recruitment process. The proposal asks the Ministry of Interior to consider raising the age limit, increasing the quota for associate degree graduates to 40 percent, and revising the '10-fold rule' which currently limits the number of candidates called to exams based on KPSS scores.
