Aegean Sea: Proposal for artificial islands near Greek islands
A proposal for the construction of artificial islands and offshore maritime platforms near the Greek islands of Chios and Kastellorizo has resurfaced in Turkey. While not an official government plan, Turkish columnist Levent Ersin Orallı has advocated for these multifunctional facilities to strengthen Turkey's long-term presence in the Aegean. The proposed structures would include port installations, research stations, energy production units for solar and wind, desalination plants, and meteorological stations.
Orallı noted that under international law, such artificial islands would not acquire the status of natural islands, nor would they change the legal maritime boundaries or territorial waters of Chios or Kastellorizo.
Concurrently, tensions remain high regarding the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection project. The Turkish Ministry of Defense has asserted that any cable installation or scientific research conducted on what Ankara considers its continental shelf must be coordinated with Turkey in advance, citing international law and existing maritime agreements.
