Turkish medical experts hold breast cancer awareness program in Kahramanmaraş

Medical professionals gathered at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University Faculty of Medicine for the 5th meeting of the Breast Cancer Awareness and Increasing Screening Rates Training Program. Sponsored by Roche Turkey and organized by the Turkish Surgical Society, the program focused on early diagnosis, radiological screening methods like mammography, and modern treatment approaches including surgery and radiotherapy.

In Turkey, approximately 27,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, and one in 18 women faces a lifetime risk of the disease. Experts emphasized that increasing screening rates is critical for improving survival outcomes. Prof. Dr. Ali Uzunköy noted that a primary goal of such initiatives is to raise screening rates above 70 percent, particularly in southeastern provinces.

Additionally, medical experts addressed the perception of a ‘cancer epidemic,’ noting that rising diagnosis numbers are largely due to improved screening accessibility and better diagnostic tools rather than a sudden surge in disease prevalence. The discussions highlighted the necessity of multidisciplinary planning and patient-centered care in managing cancer treatments.
