Turkish Minister clarifies maternity leave laws after TV quiz show error

A question regarding maternity leave duration on the television program ‘Kim Milyoner Olmak İster’ has drawn significant public attention. During a 100,000 TL question, contestant Sevgül Batur was asked about the total maternity leave period for female workers in single pregnancies according to Labor Law No. 4857.

Batur answered ‘12 weeks’, which was incorrect. The correct answer was identified as 24 weeks. Following the broadcast, Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, the Minister of Family and Social Services, issued a statement on social media to clarify the legal regulations.

Minister Göktaş noted that the maternity leave period for working mothers has been increased from 16 weeks to 24 weeks. She also expressed well wishes to the contestant and thanked the program producers for bringing this critical legal topic to public awareness.
