Turkish MP proposes philosophy lessons to prevent school violence
Mehmet Emin Öz, an AK Party Erzurum MP and member of a Parliamentary Research Commission investigating school attacks, has proposed introducing philosophy lessons in schools starting from the primary level.
Öz stated that the commission is nearing the completion of its report. He argued that teaching philosophy through games, stories, and drama would help children develop questioning skills and protect them from harmful influences. By learning to analyze concepts like justice through narratives, Öz believes students will better understand how to perceive the world and avoid passive acceptance of information.
In a broader context regarding school discipline, experts suggest that addressing issues such as peer bullying and disrespect requires preventive and educational methods rather than just punishment. Recommended strategies include strengthening school guidance services, increasing family-school cooperation, and providing students with training in empathy, anger management, and conflict resolution.
