Turkish Muhtar Leaders Deny Claims of MHP Closing Offices

Muhtar association leaders in Aydın, Turkey, have issued statements refuting social media claims that Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli proposed closing the muhtarlık (neighborhood headman) system.

Muammer Yanık, President of the Efeler District Muhtars Association, clarified that the allegations are false and do not reflect Bahçeli’s official stance. He noted that MHP Balıkesir Deputy Ekrem Gökay Yüksel also confirmed the party has no such decision or demand. Yanık emphasized that the muhtarlık system is a cornerstone of democracy and serves as the primary link between the state and citizens in remote areas.

Mustafa Karaburun, President of the Nazilli Muhtars Association, echoed these sentiments, stating that the institution is essential for local governance. He highlighted that muhtars play active roles in coordinating with police, gendarmerie, and health services, and act as the first point of contact for citizens regarding infrastructure and social needs.
