Karabağlar Municipality Tackles 80 Million‑Lira Waste Burden and Illegal Scrap Yards

Mayor Helil Kınay reported that unowned waste and scrap generated by industry and businesses impose an annual extra cost of about 80 million Turkish lira on Karabağlar. The municipality has imposed roughly 4 million lira in administrative fines on polluters and sealed 55 illegal scrap depots, filing 51 criminal complaints with the public prosecutor. To manage the waste, the city operates nine collection vehicles with a staff of 15, consuming around 200 litres of fuel each day. Ongoing investments include renewing about 1,000 waste containers last year and adding new ones this year, as well as establishing a new call centre and digital communication tools for faster citizen response. The council also discussed the reconstruction protocol for the earthquake‑damaged Uzundere Cemevi in partnership with İzmir Metropolitan Municipality.
