Sungurbey Camii in Niğde Reopens After Three‑Year Restoration
Turkey’s 691‑year‑old Sungurbey Camii in Niğde completed a three‑year restoration overseen by the Directorate of Foundations. Work began in March 2023, repairing stonework, wooden elements and structural supports while preserving the mosque’s original Ilkhanid‑era architecture.
The mosque reopened for worship on Friday, 5 June, with the first congregational prayer since the renovation. The ceremony was attended by Niğde Governor Cahit Çelik, Mayor Emrah Özdemir, local MPs and religious leaders, and featured remarks affirming the cultural and spiritual importance of the restored monument.
