Turkish municipalities boost wheat harvests and revive ancient grain

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality began a fully subsidised wheat harvest service in the Keles district, deploying combine harvesters to 98 farmers across four neighbourhoods on 2,600 acres. The programme, coordinated by the municipality's agricultural subsidiary, provides 100% cost coverage, aiming to ensure timely harvest, reduce crop losses and lower production costs for local growers.

Meanwhile, Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality completed the harvest of the historic Kavılca wheat, an ancient five‑thousand‑year‑old variety cultivated on 73 acres using seed stock sourced from Kars. About 17 tonnes were harvested, with a portion earmarked for the city’s traditional Küllüoba bread and the remainder saved as seed for future planting. The project highlights the municipality’s effort to preserve agricultural heritage and support local farmers.
