Turkish municipalities expand social services for retirees

Municipalities in Turkey are expanding social services for retirees through dedicated community centers and affordable cafeterias.

In Istanbul, the Maltepe Municipality has opened the ‘Emekli Dayanışma Evi’ (Retiree Solidarity House). The facility provides a social space for retirees to gather and escape the city's pace. It offers a menu of low-cost food and beverages, including tea, coffee, sandwiches, and pastries, designed to accommodate fixed budgets.

In Kayseri, the Metropolitan Municipality operates ‘Emekliler Kafeteryası’ (Retirees' Cafeteria) across five different regions. These centers are equipped with mini-libraries, chess sets, and television areas to encourage socialization. Additionally, the city has implemented the YADES program in cooperation with the Ministry of Family and Social Services to support individuals over the age of 65 who have low income or lack family support.
