Selçuklu Sports Center Opens, Aims to Produce Olympic Athletes

The Selçuklu district of Konya inaugurated the Sports Talent Identification and Development Center, a 45,000‑square‑metre, LEED‑certified green building that generates about 85% of its energy from rooftop solar panels. The facility houses 17 sports disciplines, accommodates more than 5,000 young athletes, and provides modern training, assessment and monitoring systems to guide children toward the most suitable sports. Mayor Ahmet Pekyatırmacı said the centre will help the district “produce athletes for the Olympic Games” and highlighted its role in expanding the summer sports schools, which now serve over 5,200 participants. In the same period, Selçuklu Belediyespor’s U15 football team won the national championship. The mayor praised the champions in a council meeting, noting that their success reflects the effectiveness of the municipality’s long‑standing sports‑school program and the centre’s development pipeline. Together, the new centre and recent team victories illustrate Selçuklu’s broader strategy to nurture elite athletes from an early age.
