Turkish municipalities in İzmir and Darıca are strengthening disaster preparedness measures in commemoration of the August 17 Marmara earthquake anniversary.

In İzmir, Karabağlar Mayor Helil Kınay renewed a 10-year protocol with the AKUT Search and Rescue Association to utilize the Şehit Uzman Çavuş Akın Acar complex. Kınay also announced that a Disaster Coordination Center will soon be operational within the municipality to enhance cooperation between civil society, professional chambers, and local volunteers.

In Darıca, Mayor Muzaffer Bıyık emphasized the importance of urban transformation to create a resilient building stock. The municipality has established a Disaster Affairs Directorate and a Darıca Search and Rescue Unit to improve coordination and response capacity before, during, and after potential disasters.
