Turkish neighborhood head sentenced to prison after municipal dispute

Elmas Abut, the neighborhood head (muhtar) of Yeniköy in the Acıpayam district of Denizli, has been sentenced to 1 month and 26 days in prison following a confrontation at the Acıpayam Municipality.

The incident occurred when Abut visited the municipal building to address community requests. A dispute arose with the private secretary to the Mayor, Levent Yıldırım. According to court proceedings and security footage, the argument escalated, with Abut allegedly returning to the office to confront the staff member. The private secretary claimed Abut used insulting language and attempted to physically attack them, though they were prevented by other personnel.

Abut had previously claimed she was forcibly removed from the building under the Mayor's instructions. During the trial at the Acıpayam 1st Criminal Court of First Instance, Abut expressed regret for the incident.
