Turkish non-commissioned officers demand rights on professional day

October 17 marks World Non-Commissioned Officers Day, a date established following a 1984 decision to commemorate the profession. While the day is observed through various solidarity meetings and commemorative messages across Turkey and Northern Cyprus, professional groups are using the occasion to demand systemic reforms.

The Büyük Astsubay Platformu issued a statement emphasizing that personnel are seeking the delivery of long-delayed rights rather than mere privileges. Their demands include establishing starting ranks and grades appropriate to educational levels, ensuring such regulations apply to retirees, and addressing issues regarding the retirement system, premiums, and purchasing power.

Additionally, the platform called for improved transparency regarding military housing and camps, as well as investigations into allegations of psychological pressure or mistreatment during service. They urged for the strengthening of reliable channels for personnel to report grievances.
