Turkish officials and scholars discuss linguistic identity and regional language diversity

Discussions regarding linguistic identity and the role of regional languages have emerged in Turkey. In Trabzon, Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç participated in a seminar titled ‘Language, Style, and Politeness’ organized by the Turkish Language and Literature Association. Genç emphasized that protecting the Turkish language is a collective responsibility and a sign of national independence, noting that the language faces challenges from social media and popular culture.

In Diyarbakır, Mayor Serra Bucak Küçük addressed the use of Kurdish on business signage, stating that while Turkish is the official language, other languages exist within the region. She described these languages as the memory of the people and a cultural wealth that should be integrated into local social and cultural policies.

Historical and linguistic analyses further highlight the complexity of regional languages. Research indicates significant diversity among Kurdish dialects, such as Kurmanji, Sorani, Zazaki, and Gorani, which possess distinct grammatical structures and vocabularies, often comparable to the differences between major European languages.
