Turkish Parliament closes amid opposition protests over fund investigations
The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) closed during its first working day of the new legislative period because a quorum was not met. Opposition parties have accused the AK Party of intentionally causing the session to close to avoid discussions regarding alleged fund misappropriation and corruption.
Opposition representatives from various parties, including the İYİ Party, DEVA Party, and the Labor Party, have called for the establishment of a parliamentary research commission to investigate these fund allegations. They argue that a formal investigation is necessary to clear the names of politicians and bureaucrats who are not involved in the alleged misconduct and to restore public trust in political institutions.
In response, AK Party Group Deputy Chair Özlem Zengin stated that the party is following the fund crisis issue with sensitivity and expressed hope that the matter would be resolved collectively. Meanwhile, CHP representatives criticized the lack of action from responsible institutions despite warnings from international index providers and legal authorities regarding capital market transactions.
