Turkish Parliament debates Turkish Red Crescent Law proposal

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) has begun deliberations on the 'Turkish Red Crescent Law' proposal. The first three articles of the bill have been approved, establishing the organization's legal framework, rights, and exemptions in accordance with international humanitarian standards and the Geneva Conventions.

The legislation aims to clarify the Red Crescent's legal status, strengthen its disaster response capacity, and define its role as an international humanitarian organization. Proponents, including representatives from the AK Party and MHP, argue the law will align the institution with international examples and enhance Turkey's humanitarian aid capabilities.

Opposition members from the CHP, İYİ Party, and others have raised concerns regarding transparency, accountability, and oversight. Key points of contention include the potential transfer of public assets—such as machinery and real estate—to the organization without cost, and the need for strict auditing by the Court of Accounts (Sayıştay) to ensure the proper use of public resources and donations.
