Turkey Fund Coordination Board meets to address market crisis

The Turkish Parliament (TBMM) has commenced its new legislative year amidst significant political and economic developments. During the opening session, President Erdoğan addressed the nation, emphasizing that the government is working to resolve issues within the fund market and ensuring that no one's rights are compromised.

In response to a crisis involving 131 funds and approximately 455,758 investors, the Fund Coordination Board, chaired by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, held its second meeting. The board discussed payment schedules and methods for calculating net investment amounts for investors in funds undergoing liquidation. Under new regulations, interim payments for investors with net investments under 1 million TL will cover their full amount, while those with investments of 1 million TL or more will be capped at 1 million TL for the initial phase. Additionally, the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) is creating separate accounts for problematic funds to facilitate the return of unfair gains.

The parliamentary opening also saw political tension, as members of the Yeni Parti left the General Assembly during President Erdoğan's speech. This action drew criticism from MHP Leader Devlet Bahçeli and TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, who described the departure as lacking political etiquette. Meanwhile, former TBMM Speaker Bülent Arınç commented on the fund crisis, citing potential losses of 800 billion and calling for accountability.
