Turkish Parliament to establish Monitoring Commission for disarmament process

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey is moving to establish a Monitoring Commission as part of the ‘Framework Law’ (Law No. 7595) regarding the ‘Terror-Free Turkey’ process. This commission is designed to oversee the process of a terrorist organization dissolving itself and laying down arms.

TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş is scheduled to meet with leaders of various political parties starting next week, including the AK Party, MHP, DEM Party, CHP, and Yeni Parti. He also plans to consult with representatives of parties without parliamentary groups and visit the leader of the İYİ Party to request membership in the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission.

Unlike international models in countries such as Ireland or Colombia, which often utilize the United Nations or foreign entities as a ‘third eye’ to monitor disarmament, Turkey intends to use the Parliament itself as the primary supervisory body. The commission will be tasked with monitoring activities, reporting findings, providing recommendations to relevant institutions, and preparing legal proposals when necessary.
