Turkish Pharmacists Association calls for electronic drug tracking
Umut Öksüz, President of the Turkish Pharmacists Association, has called for the urgent implementation of an electronic tracking system to combat the circulation of illegal and counterfeit drugs.
Data from police and court reports between August 22 and September 22, 2026, indicates a significant crackdown on illegal pharmaceutical activity. During this period, eight individuals were arrested in five separate incidents involving green prescription drugs. Authorities seized over 3,800 pills and 16 grams of powder. A separate seizure in Ledra Palas yielded an additional 2,800 pills.
Öksüz emphasized that illegal drugs pose a severe risk to public health, as their origin and storage conditions cannot be verified, potentially leading to poisoning, treatment failure, or death. To mitigate these risks, he advocated for the adoption of electronic green prescriptions and a comprehensive Drug Tracking System (İTS) to monitor medication from importation to the point of patient delivery.
