Turkish playwright Bilgesu Erenus dies at 83

Bilgesu Erenus, a leading figure in contemporary Turkish theatre, died at the age of 83. Born in 1943 in Gölpazarı, Bilecik, he studied journalism at Istanbul University and worked for TRT before becoming a prolific playwright, novelist and screenwriter. His best‑known play, "Yaftalı Tabut," along with works such as "İkili Oyun," "Misafir," "Aydınlıkevler" and "Güneyli Bayan," earned national and international productions and translations.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s City Theatres announced his death on social media and scheduled a memorial ceremony for 8 August at 10:30 a.m. on the Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage. Erenus was also active in the Turkish Writers’ Union and participated in the post‑1980 Aydınlar petition to Çankaya. Tributes highlighted his contributions to theatre, literature and social discourse.
