Turkish politicians call for anti-corruption reforms and economic inquiries
Turkish political leaders are calling for systemic reforms to combat corruption and economic inequality. DEVA Party Chairman Ali Babacan has challenged both the government and the opposition to implement 54 specific legal requirements set by the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO). Babacan noted that since 2022, Turkey has only fulfilled 10 of these 54 obligations, emphasizing the need for new laws regarding public procurement and zoning rents to prevent corruption.
In the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Saadet Party MP Birol Aydın criticized the current economic management and wealth distribution. Addressing recent discussions regarding fund crises, Aydın introduced the concept of a ‘satiety limit’ (tokluk sınırı) to describe the unlimited accumulation of wealth through public tenders and zoning profits. He called for the establishment of a parliamentary research commission to investigate the political and economic connections behind recent financial controversies and the systemic nature of wealth accumulation.
