Turkey political landscape shifts as CHP members join Yeni Parti

Turkey's political landscape is experiencing significant shifts following the formation of the Yeni Parti by Özgür Özel, leading to a wave of resignations from the Republican People's Party (CHP).

In Çorum, CHP Provincial Chair Tuncay Yılmaz reported that 5,922 members have resigned from the party following a 'mutlak butlan' (absolute nullity) decision. Meanwhile, Şarköy Mayor Alpay Var announced his resignation from the CHP to join the Yeni Parti, citing a lack of faith in the current central management. In Muğla, Menteşe Mayor Gonca Köksal Aras and 22 municipal council members also defected to the new party.

The split has also triggered tensions regarding high-profile leaders. Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş denied claims of a recent meeting with Özgür Özel regarding his political future, with his office clarifying that communication has only occurred via telephone. Despite rumors of movement, CHP spokespersons maintain that Yavaş intends to remain within the CHP. Additionally, the Yeni Parti has begun expanding its local presence, recently opening a district office in Karşıyaka, İzmir.
