Turkey advisor suggests early 2028 elections

Presidential advisor Mehmet Utsum has indicated that Turkey's 2028 elections will likely be moved forward to March or April. This shift from the currently scheduled May date could have significant constitutional implications.

Under the current presidential system established by the 2017 referendum, a president is limited to two terms. However, the constitution allows a candidate to run again if the Parliament calls for early elections before the current term is completed. Moving the election date could potentially allow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to bypass these limits and seek another term.

While allies of the President have suggested this move, the main opposition has expressed skepticism. Opposition leader Ozgur Ozel stated that focusing the political debate on Erdogan's potential re-election is unacceptable, noting that the opposition seeks early elections primarily to challenge the current economic policies.
