Turkish referees detained in illegal betting investigation
The investigation into the “Referees File,” conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Illegal Betting and Sports Crimes Bureau, has expanded. Following the analysis of digital evidence and MASAK records, Super Lig referee Yasin Kol and assistant referee Göktuğ Hazar Erel have been taken into custody. They face allegations including violation of Law No. 7258, participation in forgery, and abuse of duty.
The broader investigation involves allegations of torture, forgery of official documents, breach of trust, and unlawful acquisition of personal data. Previous operations in Istanbul, Ankara, Elazığ, and Manisa resulted in the detention of several high-profile figures, including Central Referee Board (MHK) President Ferhat Gündoğdu and various officials from the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).
Numerous current and former referees have been summoned to provide statements as complainants or witnesses. The investigation is being coordinated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and carried out by the Istanbul Police Department's Financial Crimes Department.
