Turkish researchers develop hybrid polymer to extend battery life

Researchers at Yıldız Technical University, led by Associate Professor Ali Can Zaman, have created a new electroactive polymer by reacting elemental sulfur with acetone using a novel polymerisation method. The hybrid polymer combines the energy‑storage capacity of sulfur with hydrophobic properties from organic compounds, aiming to improve the lifespan and fast‑charging capability of next‑generation lithium‑sulfur batteries.

The material has been registered with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. In addition to battery applications, the team demonstrated that derivatives of the polymer can capture carbon dioxide and act as sorbents for water purification, including mercury removal, suggesting broader environmental uses.
