Turkish retirees call for stronger organization to fight economic hardship

Pensioners and labor unions in Turkey are intensifying calls for stronger organization to combat economic hardships. The Edirne Pensioners Association has called upon millions of retirees to unite on a common platform, arguing that because retirees have limited union rights, they must build a structure capable of proposing solutions and creating democratic public opinion to influence decision-makers.

In Izmir, members of the All Retirees Union (Tüm Emeklilerin Sendikası) held their 30th consecutive week of sit-in protests. Spokesperson Semra Süren criticized capital-oriented policies that increase the tax burden on workers and retirees while failing to address the inadequacy of pension payments. Süren specifically condemned the practice of applying raises based on base salaries, describing it as a loss of income for retirees. The protesters also highlighted the rising cost of living, noting that food expenses for a family of four have significantly outpaced minimum wage levels, and criticized the allocation of national resources toward defense spending rather than social welfare.
