Turkish retirees demand economic reforms and social justice
Pensioner organizations and labor unions in Turkey have issued a series of demands to combat economic hardship, citing low income, housing difficulties, and health issues. In Mersin, representatives from various groups, including Tüm Emekli-Sen and KESK, presented a 12-point list of demands. Key requests include equalizing the lowest pension to the lowest civil servant salary, increasing the monthly pension connection rate to 70%, and ensuring automatic updates to pensions based on independent inflation data.
In Ankara, members of the All Retirees' Union (Tüm Emeklilerin Sendikası) held a demonstration, stating that providing a decent living wage is a matter of justice rather than just inflation. Protesters criticized the current government's economic policies, arguing that retirees are being forced into poverty.
Demonstrators also addressed the death of retired policeman Ali Şekeroğlu. Union leaders rejected the characterization of his death as a mere individual suicide, instead attributing the circumstances to the broader economic and political pressures facing retirees.
