Turkey economic actors protest rising inflation and pensioner hardship

Economic actors and political figures in Turkey are expressing widespread concern over rising inflation and the diminishing purchasing power of pensioners and fixed-income earners. Following the release of September inflation data by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), which reported a monthly increase of 1.84% and an annual rate of 29.73%, various groups have criticized the discrepancy between official figures and the actual cost of living.

Kenan Pars, President of the TÜED Uludağ branch, highlighted the gap between the minimum pension of 23,552 TL and the hunger and poverty thresholds reported by TÜRK-İŞ. He also raised questions regarding a fund crisis involving billions of liras, contrasting the lack of resources for pensioners with the scale of investment fund issues.

Political opposition, represented by CHP Group Deputy Chairman Rahmi Aşkın Türeli, criticized the government's economic management, stating that inflation targets have been repeatedly revised upward and that the public is bearing the cost of the crisis. Meanwhile, labor unions and pensioner associations, including Memur-Sen and the Revolutionary Pensioners Union, have called for urgent measures, such as significant pension increases and social policies to address the rising costs of food, rent, and energy.
