Turkish Rheumatology Association urges early diagnosis for joint diseases

Dr. Ahmet Gül, President of the Turkish Rheumatology Association, has emphasized the critical importance of early diagnosis and treatment in managing rheumatological diseases to prevent permanent loss of function. Marking World Arthritis Day on October 12, Gül noted that these conditions can affect individuals at any stage of life, from childhood to old age.

There are more than 150 different diseases that can cause musculoskeletal and joint symptoms. Because similar symptoms can stem from various conditions, timely and accurate diagnosis is essential. Key warning signs include prolonged joint pain, swelling, restricted movement, increased temperature in the joints, and particularly morning stiffness.

Gül stated that because symptoms may not all appear simultaneously in the early stages, some patients are monitored under definitions such as ‘early arthritis’ or ‘early rheumatic disease.’ He highlighted that seeking evaluation from a competent rheumatology specialist as early as possible increases the chances of effective treatment, which helps control pain and preserves mobility for daily life.
